The Business Opportunity
Openmind (www.openmindnetworks.com) is a firm that provides text and multimedia messaging infrastructure and signaling solutions to mobile operators and inter-carriers across the world. Its flagship product, Traffic Control, consolidates all messaging functions for mobile carriers and can be deployed on premise or on the cloud.
Openmind needed to deliver timely information about the problems, performance, and usage of the messaging infrastructure to various stakeholders. Chiefly, corporate management at client telecom operators needed daily reports on the status of the platform to gauge operational health.
Internal stakeholders, such as network engineers, needed daily reports on the health of the messaging infrastructure, whereas VPs required monthly reports on whether key performance indicators (KPIs) had been met.
The existing solution in TrafficControl involved Jasper Reports with a MySQL database that did not scale smoothly and required technical expertise to create reports and queries. Worse yet, the reports generated did not look sophisticated or professional enough to share with customers.
Openmind began using the Elasticsearch-Logstash-Kibana(ELK) platform in TrafficControl for collecting CDRs from messaging nodes.
The ELK platform created an index of all log info (including time, size, to-and-from network information) and provided real-time visibility into the messaging platform with the required flexibility. However, it lacked the reporting quality capability required by various stakeholders.
Openmind then introduced Skedler to TrafficControl and integrated it as Traffic Control's reporting solution for the ELK platform.
Skedler generates reports that look and feel modern and professional. Each report is simple to create and easy to customize, providing the flexibility to meet the reporting requirements for a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The ELK platform and Skedler were deployed in CentOS servers typically located on client sites. Skedler was then deployed on the same Elasticsearch node as Kibana to add the reporting component to TrafficControl.

As well, Skelder meets customer service-level agreement (SLA) reporting and helps deliver timely information at the right time to the right people. Overall, it results in improved customer satisfaction, lower customer churn, and better margins for Openmind Networks's clients.
