Skedler Elasticsearch Kibana Reporting & Alerting and Grafana Reporting Cost & Pricing Guide
We understand that adding reports & alerts to Elasticsearch Kibana and Grafana is a huge productivity and stakeholder focused decision. Our goal is to empower you with honest and reliable Skedler cost information to help you budget for your project.
This Skedler cost and pricing guide will help you develop an initial budget and plan for the ownership costs associated with adding reporting and alerting for Elasticsearch, Kibana and Grafana.
Costs of Elasticsearch Kibana Grafana Reporting and Alerting - Five Points to ConsiderThere are a few things to consider when you need to add reporting and alerting to your Elasticsearch Kibana application or reporting to your Grafana application.
- What is the Initial licensing cost of the software?
- Is the software licensed by the number of clusters, nodes or users or other usage-based metrics?
- Is there an option for multi-tenant licensing?
- Availability of cost-effective site license, OEM or reseller licensing
- Does the same software support multiple platforms such as Elastic Stack and Grafana? Does the software support different flavors of Elastic Stack such as the Open Distro?
- What is the Incremental licensing cost of the software?
As your business grows, your deployment will grow. What is the additional cost that you would incur due to the increase in the number of users, nodes, clusters or clients?
- What is the cost of deployment?
This includes the time/effort needed from your team for setup, any external or internal help needed for creating reports and alerts and finally hardware resources.
- Timely availability and cost of maintenance updates
Both Elastic stack and Grafana release a new version every month. It is an expensive and time-consuming effort to keep pace with the ever-changing versions of the software. At the same time, it is also critical to maintain backward compatibility. So, the question is: Are updates for reporting and alerting available in a timely manner for new releases and what is the total cost for the uptake of these new releases?
- Support cost
When you need help with any technical issues or questions, is technical support available to quickly help you resolve the issue and move forward?
Skedler, Elastic Stack Features aka X-Pack, Open Source Tools, and Grafana Enterprise comparison
Let us first look at Skedler Reporting and Alerting, then we can compare it against the Elastic Stack Features aka X-Pack, open-source toolkits, and Grafana Enterprise.
Skedler Reports and Alerts - Initial Cost
Skedler Reports and Alerts are offered as an annual subscription license which includes the cost of the software, maintenance updates, and enthusiastic technical support. The subscription cost depends on the features that you need to meet your requirements. Our starter edition is just $995 per year. You can purchase reports and alerts licenses individually or as a bundle with a discount. You can add licenses for test/dev instances at a fraction(25% to be exact) of the cost of the production license. Last, but not the least, our technical team assists all users with any questions and help during the free trial period and beyond.
Unlimited Elasticsearch or Grafana Nodes
Skedler is not licensed by the number of Elasticsearch nodes or Grafana nodes. An instance(license) of Skedler Reports or Alerts connects to one instance of an ELK cluster with unlimited nodes and one instance of Grafana with no restriction on its size. Therefore, the cost of Skedler is the same if you have 3 ELK nodes or 300 ELK nodes. This could be a significant cost saving both from an initial and incremental licensing perspective.
There is no user limit on each cluster. Depending on your business requirement, your cluster can have several tens or hundreds of users creating reports and alerts.
Unlimited Reports and Alerts
Skedler Premium and Enterprise editions offer an unlimited number of reports or alerts. If you need only a limited number of reports or alerts, then you can save on the initial license cost by choosing Skedler Starter or Standard Edition.
If you are a managed service provider(MSP) hosting a multi-tenant elastic stack, you can offer value-adding reporting and alerting services to your clients with Skedler Enterprise Edition. Skedler Enterprise Edition offers multi-tenancy support with Elasticsearch security, Searchguard or ReadOnlyRest.

One solution for Elasticsearch, Grafana and more (in the future)
If you use multiple platforms such as ELK, Grafana to meet your business requirements, Skedler offers a cost-effective approach to add reporting for both platforms. Currently, we offer alerting for Elastic Stack only. Our goal is to expand the data sources that we support with Skedler. Our roadmap includes support for Influxdb, SQL and more.

Elastic Stack Features or X-Pack - Initial Cost
Elastic Stack Features aka X-Pack is an offering from Elastic. While majority of the Elastic Stack features including security are available for free with opensource or Basic Forever-Free Plan, Reporting and Alerting features are only available with the Elastic Stack Gold and Platinum subscriptions. The following are some of the key aspects of the Elastic Stack Features or X-Pack:
- Number of Nodes Based Pricing
Gold and Platinum subscriptions are based on the number of elasticsearch nodes. They typically start in the few thousand dollars per node. Depending on the size of your cluster and the number of clusters in your organization, licensing costs could go into tens of thousands of dollars per year per cluster. Please contact Elastic for the latest cost of subscriptions.
- Limited Reporting and Alerting Features
The reporting feature available with Gold and Platinum subscription allows you to export your Kibana dashboard into a standard format PDF. To schedule the reports and send it to users, you need watcher(alerting) which makes the report scheduling cumbersome. In addition, it lacks typical reporting features such as export to csv or excel, customization of reports, and bursting of reports. If you need any of these features or need reporting from Grafana, Elastic Stack features/x-pack wouldn’t be a good fit.
The alerting capability in Kibana is limited and is cumbersome to configure and maintain. It requires technical expertise and is not self-service ready. Creating an alert could take up to 2 hours per alert. The maintenance cost and productivity cost quickly add up.
- Site, OEM or Reseller licenses
Since pricing for the Elastic Stack is based on the number of nodes, cost of a site or OEM license can quickly become cost-prohibitive and venture into the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
If your organization already has the Gold or Platinum subscription, then you can add reporting and alerting at no incremental cost for your project. On the other hand, if you are using the open source or basic version of the Elastic stack and just need reporting and/or alerting, then a gold or platinum subscription of Elastic Stack features might be an overkill without enough return for your investment.
Sentinel, Elastalert, Grafana Reporter or Other Opensource toolkits - Initial Cost
The good news about Sentinel, elastalert or other open-source toolkits is that they are free. The bad news is that there is no such thing as a free lunch in this world. While it might cost nothing to download and use, the deployment, maintenance and support costs will overrun whatever cost savings that you achieved from the free download. These tools are ideally suited for developers who have the technical expertise and the time to deploy and maintain them.
- Specific to Elastic Stack or Grafana
The open-source options are typically point-solutions that are specific to either Elastic Stack or Grafana. The same solution will not work across multiple platforms. You would need to use multiple tools to schedule reports and alerts across platforms.
- Limited Reporting and Cumbersome Alerting
The opensource reporting tools allow you to export your Kibana or Grafana dashboard into a single page screenshot PDF. To schedule the reports and send it to users, you need a separate scheduler which makes the report scheduling cumbersome. Additional reporting features such as export to csv or excel, customization of reports, and bursting of reports are also missing.
In the case of alerts, the time and effort required to create(code) and maintain alerts can quickly become overwhelming. While elastalert offers a rich set of alerting features, it could be an overkill if your requirements do not need them. They are not suited for self-service environments.
- Lack of Dedicated Support
If something breaks and you are unable to send reports or alerts to your stakeholders, you are on your own. There is no immediate technical help who can quickly provide you with a quick patch to resolve the issue in a timely manner.
- Keeping up with the Elastic Stack or Grafana
This is often the biggest issue with the open-source tools. These tools are often developed and maintained a small number of developers as a side project, who might not have the bandwidth or the urgency to keep pace with the ever-changing versions of Elastic Stack or Grafana. The time lag between new releases of Elastic Stack or Grafana and the compatible open-source tools version might be significant and could disrupt your solution roadmap.
Grafana Enterprise - Initial Cost
Grafana Enterprise is a subscription offering from Grafana Labs. A reporting module is included as a part of Grafana Enterprise along with access to premium plugins. The following are some of the key aspects of the Grafana Enterprise:
- Number of Users based Pricing
Grafana Enterprise pricing is based on the number of users (editors and viewers). It is not clear if data storage is a component of enterprise pricing. The size of data is a component of the Grafana cloud licensing.
- Limited Reporting and Alerting Features
The reporting feature available with Grafana enterprise allows you to export your Grafana dashboard into a standard format PDF. It lacks typical reporting features such as export to csv or excel, customization of reports, and bursting of reports. If your stakeholders need any of these features or need reporting from Elastic Stack also, Grafana Enterprise wouldn’t be a good fit.
The alerting capability in Grafana is limited and is cumbersome to configure and maintain. It requires technical expertise and is not self-service ready.
- Site, OEM or Reseller licenses
Since pricing for the enterprise edition is based on the number of users, cost of a site or OEM license can quickly become cost-prohibitive and venture into the tens of thousands of dollars per year.
If your organization already has the Grafana enterprise subscription, then you can add reporting and alerting at no incremental cost for your project. On the other hand, if you are using the open source of the Grafana and just need reporting and/or alerting, then an enterprise subscription might be an overkill.
Skedler Reports and Alerts - Lifetime Cost of Deployment
Skedler licensing is designed to offer you value - significant features and support at compelling cost. In addition, we have designed Skedler for self-service and easy maintenance. As a result, you are able to enjoy the value of Skedler at a very low lifetime cost of deployment.
Pay the same as your business grows
As your business grows, your data size will continue to grow which requires additional Elasticsearch nodes or Grafana users. Since Skedler subscription is for an unlimited number of Elasticsearch nodes or Grafana, the licensing cost of Skedler doesn’t ramp up over the years. While there might be a cost of development adjustment in the subscription fee, you have the option of locking up the Skedler price by purchasing a two or three-year subscription.
Free deployment help when needed
Most users are able to deploy Skedler on their own using video tutorials and documentation. If you are stuck, technical help is just an email away. When you send an email to Skedler Support, the support team will quickly follow-up to troubleshoot your log file. If they are unable to help you move forward using the log file information, they will schedule a web conference call to troubleshoot and help you move forward. This happens during the free trial period and the same process is followed during the production deployment. The support and technical help is available to free trial users and licensed users at no additional cost. Optionally, users who need help or best practices with Elastic Stack reporting/alerting or Grafana reporting can also purchase remote consulting hours (in increments of 5 hours) from the knowledgeable Skedler team. The consulting fee is $995 per five hours.
Technical support included
Unlimited technical support from the knowledgeable and deeply technical Skedler team is included with the subscription cost. There are no additional fees.
Elastic Stack Features and Grafana Enterprise - Lifetime Cost of Deployment
Comparison of the estimated total cost of ownership for a sample 10 node Elasticsearch cluster($3k per node) and 100 user Grafana license (minimum of $10k license) with 20% year over year growth. Opensource maintenance cost is conservatively estimated at 0.25 full-time employee.
Pay more as your business grows
Year over year, your data size will continue to grow. Furthermore, as your business grows, your user community will grow. Growth in data or users will increase the year over year cost of licensing for Elastic Stack features and Grafana Enterprise. Anticipate an increase in annual cost that correlates to your data and user growth.
Technical support is included
Technical support from the Elastic support or Grafana Labs is included with the subscription cost. There are no additional fees.
Consulting and Training Services
Elastic offers consulting and training services for a fee. It is not clear if such services are available from Grafana labs.
Overall, you should plan for a typical enterprise software budget when it comes to estimating the total lifetime cost of deployment for Elastic or Grafana enterprise subscription.
How is Skedler able to offer a low initial cost and total cost of ownership?Unlike other enterprise software companies, our approach is radically different in several ways.
The traditional enterprise sales-driven software distribution models based on quote driven sales teams and large deals alienate and frustrate customers. In addition to creating a tremendous cost-overhead on the software company, large sales force and quota-driven model increase the licensing cost, the average deal size, and the pressure on the customers. We firmly believe that this is a broken model and is not compatible with our customer-driven approach. Therefore, we do not have any sales representatives on our team. There are no high-pressure sales tactics on the customer and the customer is encouraged to make an informed decision.
Our entire team is focused on making the Skedler products easy to try/use and providing you with all the tools+help you need to evaluate if Skedler meets your technical and budgetary requirements. If you conclude that Skedler adds incremental value to your business, we will work with you to help you procure the license and deploy the software in production (usually just a license activation). It is that simple.
It is our customer-driven approach that enables the Skedler team to offer a compelling value to users like you.
